Laurie B. Stevens, President of the Stevens Group of Companies, is often described as an exceptional businessman, innovator and builder.
Mr. Stevens graduated from Acadia University in 1955 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1957. While he launched his career with Nova Scotia
Power Inc., he quickly moved over to B.D. Stevens Ltd. to assist his father who was recovering from surgery in hospital.
Working with the Penhorn, Woodlawn and Bridgeview realty companies, Mr. Stevens started L.B. Stevens Construction, Ready-Mix, Scotia Nursing Homes Ltd., Concrete Services Ltd.,
Quality Concrete, Mobile Redy-Mix Ltd., Gateway Materials Ltd., L.&M. Enterprises Ltd., and most recently, Citadel Contractors Inc. of Raleigh, North Carolina.
In 1976, he started building tilt-up concrete buildings with the help of the late Murray Parker. Tilt-up concrete construction has since become a staple product
of B.D. Stevens Ltd. in the Maritimes and of Citadel in North Carolina. The company was recognized as the "Largest Tilt-Up Contractor" in 1996 by the North American Tilt-Up Concrete Association.
Mr. Stevens has served on a number of corporate boards including those of Atlantic Trust, iTi Education Ltd., and Novatron and Atcan Capital Ltd.
His is currently on the boards of Great Eastern Corporation and the Board of Governors of Acadian University (since 1979).
Mr. Stevens is a former president of the Home Builders Association of Nova Scotia and served as vice-president of the Home Builder's national association.
Over a 10 year period, he served on the Halifax School Board, the Regional Vocational School Board, and the Voluntary Planning Board of Nova Scotia. Mr. Stevens has served on
the Atlantic Baptist Senior Citizens Home Board in Moncton and the Gladys Manning Seniors Complex board in Windsor.
He has been an active fundraiser for the IWK Health Centre, YMCA and other organizations. He also served on the Halifax Board of Trade.
Mr. Stevens raised purebred cattle until the late 1970's. He enjoys the time he spends in the garden or on the golf course and often speaks of his passion for tracing the roots of his family tree.
Laurie Stevens, along with Hector Jacques and Frank Manning Covert, was inducted into the
Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame in June 2001.
